At La Vaca Independiente, we select the most iconic of the work of photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo in a volume published in collaboration with the New York Museum of Art.

Manuel Álvarez Bravo was a Mexican photographer and cinematographer, recognized for capturing the landscape and people of the various latitudes of Mexico with mastery and originality. The formal experiments of the 1920s were followed by modernist works inspired by international trends such as surrealism. Subsequently, he developed an identifiable style in which he turned to the capture and representation of national customs and the most intricate Mexican rituals.

Most of the 175 tritone plates in this volume were made from rare old prints collected in private collections or furnished by the artist. Some had never been published and others had not been seen or exhibited since the 1930s.
